No Degree? Your Phone Can Still Find You Work
Think of the mason who can read a site plan by eye, the painter who knows exactly how much primer a wall will take, or the driver who knows every shortcut in the district. Many of them left school early. Most of them send voice notes on WhatsApp, watch videos on YouTube, and pay with UPI without a second thought. And many of them still start the morning not knowing whether there will be work today. The skill is there. What's missing is a way for the right people to find it.
Skill is not the same as a certificate
Most daily-wage work in India is learned on the job, from a senior mistri, a relative, or years of practice. According to the government's Periodic Labour Force Survey 2025, only 4.2% of people aged 15–59 have ever received formal vocational or technical training. In other words, for the vast majority of working India, skill doesn't come with a certificate — and it shouldn't need one to be taken seriously.
A marksheet can't show that you lay a straight line of bricks, finish a job on time, or come back the next day. A track record can.
The real problem: work that comes and goes
People with less formal education are rarely sitting idle — most simply can't afford to. The same PLFS 2025 data puts overall unemployment at 3.1%, while unemployment among people educated to secondary level and above is higher, at 6.5%. The harder problem for everyone else is irregular work: about one in five workers in India (20.2%) is a casual labourer, often hired one day at a time.
That kind of work is hard to plan around, and a few things make it harder than it needs to be:
- No visible track record. A new contractor doesn't know your work, so every job starts from zero.
- Jobs that are too far away. Work you hear about late, or can't reach on time, isn't really work you can take.
- Depending on one or two contacts. When they don't call, there's no other way in.
- Apps that assume English and long forms. Many job tools are built for people with CVs and email IDs, not for the people who do the work.
You already have the most important tool
Here's the good news: the gap between education and opportunity doesn't apply to the phone in your pocket. The government's Comprehensive Modular Survey: Telecom 2025 found that 85.5% of Indian households have at least one smartphone, and 92.7% of rural young people aged 15–29 used the internet in the three months before the survey.
Using a phone well and having a degree are two different skills. If you can make a video call, forward a location, or reply to a voice note, you already have what it takes to find work online.
FMW: if you can use WhatsApp, you can use FMW
FMW — Find Me Work for people looking for work, Find Me Worker for people hiring — was built for exactly this. There's nothing to study and no CV to write:
- Sign in with your mobile number and an OTP. No email, no password to remember.
- Choose Worker or Contractor, then fill in a simple profile — your skills, experience, expected daily wage, and when you're available. No certificates needed.
- See work near you, filtered by distance and category across 21+ types of work, from construction and painting to driving, plumbing, loading, and general helper work.
- Apply with one tap. No long forms.
- Use it in your language. FMW works in English, Hindi, and Marathi, and job details are automatically translated into the language you choose.
- Get alerts when a matching job is posted nearby, and when you're shortlisted or hired.
- Let your work speak for you. Every completed job earns a rating, so the next contractor sees your track record, not your marksheet.
Your phone number stays private too — it's shared only during an active hiring engagement, never listed for anyone to browse.
Posting work is just as simple
FMW isn't only for people looking for work. A contractor short of hands, a shop owner who needs a loader for the day, or a family that needs a painter can post a job in a few minutes, get notified as soon as someone nearby applies, and share the job over WhatsApp with one tap. No agent and no middleman — just the job, the location, and the people close enough to do it.
Getting started in four steps
- Download FMW from Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone).
- Sign in with your mobile number and the OTP you receive.
- Choose Worker or Contractor and fill in your profile.
- Browse work near you — or post the work you need done.
Your skills got you this far
Nobody is asking for a degree to lay a floor, wire a house, or drive a truck safely. What you need is for the right people to know you exist, nearby, and ready. Your phone can do that part.
FMW is free to download on Android (Google Play) and iPhone (App Store), with a set number of free job posts and applications every 30 days to get you started.
